INKTOBER GUYS WHY NOT I've never technically done it before even though I ink regularly, let's see how it goes!

Comments: Non-repro lead and pencil sketch on printer paper, traced and inked to bee paper marker paper. Point three mm marsmatic running rapidograph black india ink. Shit fucking smeared with copics! Probably bc I layered up the lines pretty thick in some cases, still surprised bc I tested it carefully ahead of time =P

Had a rough time inking with just the smallest nib drafting pen, honestly it still wasn't fine enough and STILL clogged. But I also still don't have many other inks that won't run with copics. Guess there's plenty of days left to keep experimenting?

I had a couple ideas about the prompt "poison", made myself do the requisite 3 thumbnails that my art teacher used to require XD Glad I did, though - the first one was boring, the second one was safe, and this one put me outside my comfort zone. Which is part of the point of the inktober exercise imho, drawing stuff you're not necessarily used to, stuff you wouldn't draw otherwise.

Super inspired by the victorian farm show I watched at my sissypoo's this weekend OBVIOUSLY, I have rarely drawn this many ruffles and never mitts and a cap! Not my favorite style, but awesome as a change of pace from military jackets and knee-high boots. ALSO that wallpaper, I had such high hopes for it, it was supposed to be a slightly-too-sexual x high Victorian print, with a finely-drawn decorative botanical look based on the shape of a sprouting coco de mer. AMBITIONS, I had them! I still have them.

I will say I have learned from past mistakes where I get very excited about decorative elements and they end up overshadowing the main content. We've erred a bit too far in the opposite direction here, BUT on the other hand I did time-box myself to an hour. Pretty good for that if I do say so myself!

Uhmmm other news, working on the Redbubble store, DON'T BUY ANY XMAS presents until it's open! You have to support me. At least a little. Okay, in spirit. You have to support me in spirit. But srsly I do have a lot of awesome ideas, just have to get them out while also maintaining basic hygiene and working out constantly. Yes.

OH ALSO I got my business debit card, HUZZAH and also scary. I want to buy a bunch of art supplies because OF COURSE, but also I kind of do also need some and have been putting it off bc I didn't have the business running yet. WELP, now I get the extreme and kind of freaky pleasure of buying art supplies FOR WORK. It's crazy.

Today's project was to do a drawing similar to the one I did last time, but without reference material. It turned out not amazing BUT better than expected! The shading on the shirt came out surprisingly well - actually generally speaking most of the experiments I tried here panned out. I lost patience with the tracing which is responsible for some of the wonkiness, also was lazy and didn't put my drawing board up so her head is a little stretched out =P I am learning that patience with details is a big part of what makes something look professional. MUST NOT RUSH

I'm also scouting out places to print the first volume of BEAR MAFIA, so if you have been looking forward to that get ready!!!!

My poopy Chinesium stylus pooped out on me today! SO ANNOYED. I took it apart in a fit of pique and pulled a sloppily-soldered, hair-thin wire loose, BUT I also fixed it in two seconds with a soldering iron AND improved the design in the process. Which just returned it to a state of working badly, instead of not working at all. WHAT REALLY CHAPS MY HIDE is that this plastique excuse for a high school science project supposedly costs $60 to replace. The cherry on top is that the tablet came with an extra stylus as a "free gift", which I promptly recycled because who needs two styli? Fool me once, China. FOOL ME ONCE.

Been working my butt off on starting a new business, SAN Productions, LLC, and also working on Bear Mafia. But here's a thing I did last night! I've been super curious about the colored-pencil drawings I see in animation source books, and I finally got (most of?) the scoop.

Skipping over the commonalities between classic Western/Disney-style animation and current Japanese/anime-style animation, Japanese animation in particular has two terms it uses to refer to pre-cel production sketches: "genga", the cleaned-up pencil sketch of a (key) frame, and "douga", the clean pencil retrace or ink of said sketch for printing on the cel, with colored pencil indications for the colorist.

The douga are what interest me the most. They combine the appeal of drawn manga with the technical perfection of a blueprint. Nothing is moodily hidden in shadows or obscured by fading into the corners of a frame, not yet - it's simply the pinnacle of drawing, bare lineart with no tones or coloring to disguise its imperfections. No dependence on a lucky pencil stroke or neat trick or shading to take focus away from the perfection of shape and proportion.

ANYWAY. Here's some practice I did with a douga from the Berserk movie art book. First, I traced the sketch onto tracing paper. Then, I blew up and darkened the sketch in a copier. Next, I retraced it in my own hand (1) and filled in the details with regular pencil. Finally, from this new pencil "original", I inked and colored two drawings.

The grayscale drawing was inked with a brush marker, which I found obscured some of the detail and was hard to get a consistent medium line out of. However, it was perfect for coloring with copics (2), since the lines didn't run. The colored drawing was inked with a g-pen and Pilot ink, which handled the fine lines a bit better, and then colored with colored pencils (3).

PS: LORD A'MIGHTY what have I done to deserve this level of BS from my computer situation, I don't even know how it is deciding to format this stuff. Gosh.

Do you know what I mean here? Like, retraced it as if I were drawing it myself, accepting slight adjustments for my own unique handwriting, as it were. I've found that's the only way to get really good, smooth lines in a line-for-line copy, to trace it and then redraw from the tracing.
I have such mixed feelings about copics right now! I have only grays right now and not a full shade range in any of them, should I fill in the gaps when they're so expensive? And also I found out you can get a full set of colors from China for $30? Should I get that instead? Do I even want to get into coloring with markers?
In fairly nasty colors, I might add. Although I feel colored pencils are a better approximation for cel-painting acrylics than digital coloring or alcohol markers.

No, I am not dead. I'm starting a business and also having a flare-up of depression. Also I quit nicotine which hasn't helped my mood, but has noticably improved my running.

I am still dedicated to Mission: Make Cool Things. TO INFINITY. I will make the coolest of things.

AND I will have a business license. So I can also sell cool things! LEGALLY.

This is still a god-awful ton of legal minutiae, though. How do people do this normally? I feel like I am exhibiting greater-than-average reading comprehension and research skills here and I'm STILL not sure I'm getting everything right. Jiminy.

Anyway here's one, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME, triceratops in flower crown means so much. Look at its noble face there. So sweet!

I have strong feelings about dinosaur restorations, in the case of Ceratopsia I am currently 100% in the camp of "frills were for jaw muscle attachments". THINK ABOUT IT. FORM AN OPINION.

I hope I draw this again someday with a different inking style, I like how it turned out but sometimes you get tired of defaulting to a chisel marker just because it's got the best family of line variation. Or maybe the default sizes are good for my canvas sizes? I keep going to it for layout and then not changing for inking.

I set a new max deadlift for myself on Monday, and then again on Wednesday (200 pounds!), and also got punched in the gut a lot on Tuesday. And I have indeed discovered new types of soreness. It sounds like a cheesy movie line, "You will discover a new definition of pain, Mr. Bond", but in this case it's actually true.

So the next step of course was to add some shading and beta. The shading came out okay (as it often does), but AS USUAL my method of adding black is very trial and error. This time I tried scribbling in where I thought looked good on a separate layer, then filled in the black in that approximate area while respecting the underlying contour. STILL NOT GREAT. I love how it looks when it works though. SO MUCH, so much that I will keep trying even though this is the ink equivalent of I-let-my-preschooler-do-my-makeup. And then we will color it! Haha! Another thing I am not yet pro at.

Maybe I should practice more black and white life sketching? Or looking at black and white photos? I get used to how easy tone is and then when I want that HIGH CONTRAST POP (which, when do I not),I'm just at a loss as to how solid black works. All my favorite artists make it look so easy, grr! shakes fist

Also personal life update, going on a trip for a week starting this Saturday! I haven't decided but I may use the time to bootstrap a new dynamic site so that y'all can finally see Bear Mafia (YEAHHHHHHHH GET EXCITED) and also finish off a couple design things so I don't have to worry about the deadline. Maybe! We'll see. Mostly I want to set off fireworks XD

Also of course I went in to do a screentone background but then my computer crashed and I decided that was enough of that! Indeed.

I haven't done monoline-inking for a while, I can't really say it's my favorite but I looove how clean it looks! This would look even better with some black filled in, maybe even in full color. Those are flower petals not snow btw! I don't know why they felt appropriate, they just did.

That's right, they're both beauty blogs! I value both of these resources extremely after having discovered them while sick a week ago, both for normal human makeup needs and for understanding how to color a face. I've struggled with mixing skin tone since forever - indeed, with mixing colors in general - and it's pretty magical to think of a gray shirt as not gray but purple, or skin as not beige but yellow or orange, and to see that borne out on the canvas.

Behold the glory of my properly aligned, handmade D I G I T O N E S

Using all nine depths makes this more of a grayscale drawing than a toned one, BUT I WANT YOU TO APPRECIATE the glory of tones and how convincingly they approximate color in BLACK AND WHITE ONLY. For those of us for whom gray simply doesn't cut it. CONTRAST CONTRAST CONTRAST.

I'd get a tattoo saying "bleed black + white" but it wouldn't be perfect black and white. So no. Speaking of having an obsession with high-contrast inking, in an omake (bonus comic) from one of my favorite manga artists, she hollers to her assistant, "Fool! Black ink runs in my veins!", which sounds like the coolest thing ever.

I'm extra excited about tones today because I wrote a blog article about it and how I made these tones, and I even think I have the HTML figured out to post it to my soon-to-be-main site? Haven't figured out how to integrate all the changes in git though. Because of course I didn't save versions as I went, just made a new copy to mess around with in a text editor. HEH. Heheheheh. Heh.

HRNNNNGH OHMYGOSH YOU GUYS

So here is the same picture as last time BUT

First of all I finished the inking properly, you can see there's a lot more beta (black fill) and more detail (for instance on the fan), also I cleaned up a lot of the disconnected lines and smoothed things out. The picture just begged for it, I couldn't leave it half-finished!

Then instead of going for the cel-shading I'd initially envisioned, I tried for a full tone shading. Now I'm pleased with how it turned out, I've never tried to shade everything with tones before and I feel like the depth came out pretty well.

The more exciting thing is that I finally figured out how to create custom tone brushes in Krita! They're not on display here BUT I am definitely going to be sharing them in the future, WATCH THIS SPACE

they're so cool oh my gosh, actual different brushes with different grades of tone, with TRANSPARENT BACKGROUNDS, and all of them are on the same grid so you never get moire effects, it's a brand new world out here HRNGHPHMPH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH so exciting!

Okay, so this turned out to be a fun one for the 250th strip! I inked a 4"x4" panel yesterday, then scanned and added tone today. I love how the inking turned out, and the tone looks pretty cool too. I like the small size of the inking, it would be fun to do these as collectible originals. Also note how banging it looks shrunk down to print size, I feel like my line weights are right on point!

I imagine this punk-ass cyborg martial artist screaming in pain and rage, as the blackguard rival that she went all out in fighting during their showdown escapes in her (the rival's) spaceship.

Just tested the image resolution in a web browser, eww? I keep telling myself I'll fix the crap image resizing on herpaderp when I rewrite the site, but it bothers me soooo muuuuch. How bad can a quick patch on someone else's code be?

Since I don't have a comic for you today (or yesterday HA), I thought I'd show you what I've been working on instead of comics lately! Frickin' websites yo!

I've been working through the Mozilla webdev tutorials for a while, but things FINALLY came together when I learned enough text styling to make a menu/ incidentally picked up enough html to make columns. WHAM BAM off to the races with making some websites!

I already made a nice style sheet as part of the CSS assessment, so I basically retooled the HTML to have the content I would want on a homepage. For now my goal is just to have a clean-looking, if basic, site. But not TOO basic, I would like to have more than one working page. And maybe get my frickin' lists to align properly! That is why it is CSS sometimes, right now my fixes are failing because I ran in half-cocked and so my inheritance structure is a hot mess.

It's pretty awesome to be able to build even a basic site though! Way more than I could do a couple months ago. There's so much stuff I want to publish! I wonder if I should I get more domains?

OH ALSO behold the ironic glory of hipster ipsum! Which I also learned about through the Mozilla webdev tutorials! It's Lorem ipsum but with hipsters in, you probably haven't heard of it.

So the story here is I've been working on websites and business cards lately, and so I've been a) going through a lot of old art and b) working more on the computer than on inking. Missed inking so I did these ladies, a real throwback to the days when I was working hard just on learning to handle a dip pen instead of actually making comics. I really enjoyed being able to focus on technique again instead of how a page fits into a story. Also noticed that I haven't colored anything in a while, even though it's a pain in the butt I still like the sense of weight it gives.

So before I dive into CSS today I gave myself half an hour to color this scan as today's comic. Ten minutes per figure gave me some kind of janky results, I'm out of practice for coloring plus my preset color palette is pretty crap for shading. Ain't give a damn.

Copied the lady from one of the graphic-sha manga books so I could use its line weights as a guideline. Left to right, they're inked with a maru pen, a g pen, and a kabura pen.

for the love of gosh click on the magnifying glass to view at a higher res, resizing this is NOT pretty. OKAY SO THIS GIRL HEY, first of all I did NOT do her justice in this sadly. I am inexperienced at conveying sparkle and that is what she is ALL ABOUT.

the inspiration of her aesthetic is the flat-out, everything-done look of prom-goers with the dead-serious glitziness of beauty pageants. Hair? Styled, curled, sprayed, bedazzled. Nails? Six layers of holographic glitter. Makeup? Full face and setting spray, plus some rhinestones for good measure. This isn't about competition or being attractive. This is about perfection and standards and shining like justice because she can, and also there is no force on earth that can stop her. She is unbreakable, untarnishable, impossible to touch or slow down. She doesn't need armour or running shoes because you'll never land a hit.

Her fighting style is based on her speed. Her sandals are soled with cleats she can change for the terrain, and since she never slows down her weight is always on her toes. Her weapons are 1) being terrifying and 2) anything fast, sharp and shiny. This girl favors a razor-edged whip-sword. The shield is mostly for show, it's just a pointy lattice that's set with jewels. Girls like these are shock troops, they go in first and fast and make the enemy think three times about their plans for that day.

Emergency supplies are basically mascara and hairspray; since they're only on the field for a few hours they count on going back to camp for food, water, and shade. What they do carry is kept in an appropriately sparkly fanny pack.

glitter warrior? dazzle princess? I don't know what to call these girls but I come up with them at the drop of a hat. I have two more sketched out in my notebook complete with details on nail polish, hair styles and taste in cell phones, more info than I can convey in this type of drawing tbh. I super wanted to color this one but decided I cared more about doing the shadows instead. If you're curious, the prints and patterns are a pastel candy rainbow, and the rest of her getup is solid darker colors. Blue hair! Please note her water bottle, hydration is very important for glitter warriors. She carries her stuff around in a satchel but doesn't take the satchel into battle, instead she sets up a hidden mini-basecamp for it. Her emergency supplies include vitamin drink mix, jelly beans, a healthy snack, and hello kitty bandaids. Also a worn deck of cards. She has teal nails and loves putting cute accessories on her saber. Her backup weapon is probably darts.

Joking-not-really-joking with my friends yesterday about needing a support group for people with giant legs. I've been doing these super heavy workouts to develop strength and endurance for karate, in no way expecting that I would actually gain a lot of muscle mass. J/K, my thighs are now gigantic and I've put on 15 pounds. There's a degree of anxiety from no longer fitting into the standard slim=attractive box. On the flip side, I straight picked up my husband this morning, which is PRETTY AWESOME. Awesomeness trumps bogus standards every day.

celebrated my birthday this weekend! I was initially doing a picture of my new sweet shades and manga to memorialize their awesomeness. Well, then I had to add lego earrings, a big scarf and a crown, because they looked cool. I sat down to do a comic and realized I hadn't acknowledged the arrival of 2018 yet!! So here it is, my wish for a happy and safe year for everybody ^______^ This wish apparently wanted to be expressed as a blendy gray seascape this year, whatever, I'm not bothered. I'm maybe a little bothered at how much bird silhouettes look like bat silhouettes, that's a fine line there. Not so fine that I'm going to look up reference photos though! Hahahahaha.

so, to give some context, what this means is that my new Linux distro, ArchLinux, DID NOT COME WITH SSH. ssh is a super common utility, this is like building a new kitchen and finding out that it doesn't come with a sink.
